Possible fuel injectors replacement

extent of damage not easily determined by mechanic. Friday, my vehicle started hard idle at a red light. Check engine light was flashing. I was 3 minutes from home. Got the car into the driveway and turned it off. I smelled gas. I had it towed to my mechanic, who called me on Saturday saying that the fuel injectors may need to be replaced but he wont be able to tell if any damage was done to the catalytic converter until he replaces the injection system. Does this sound right?

Yes it does because to evaluate the catalyst the engine needs to be running at stoichiometric ratio, (or normal fuel ratio in other words). You need to then evaluate the front vs rear oxygen sensor and catalyst monitors for proper operation, meaning the rear sensors (after cat) will need to be stable at .4-.6 volts. If they mirror the front (pre-catalytic converter) sensors and are switching from 0 to 1 volt like the pre-catalytic converter sensors,then the catalytic converter/s are bad. Excess fuel in the exhaust will cause the catalyst to overheat and crack the internal honeycomb structure and the material that it is made of. Yes it is. I've seen catalyst get replaced only to go bad in a matter of minutes because a coil failed. Catalyst manufacturers often times will give a disclaimer that they will not warranty their catalytic converters if the vehicle has any driveability symptoms. But yours might be in good shape after the repair is done! I hope it turns out for the best!

Hello,

Direct Trouble Code[DTC] P0301 is a misfire in cylinder 1, DTC P0316 is for a misfire detected on startup[first 1000 revolutions], and I can't find DTC P00c00 anywhere on the list of DTC's for your vehicle. Is your vehicle's engine the turbo model?

No. It’s the eco boost.

The Eco-Boost would be the turbo version. That is where they get the boost from. It's a small displacement engine with the turbocharger forcing it to act like a larger engine.
It could be a faulty injector, however it could also be a failing fuel pump.
P00c6-00 is a code for low fuel pressure while the engine is cranking. It can cause misfires and could easily cause the codes you have. The fuel smell could be a leak which caused the low pressure as well possibly at the cylinder 1 injector.

With these details in place I can see the possibility of a failed fuel injector! The low pressure code can set if an injector gets hung open and the flashing check engine light is due to the type A misfire. The light flashed anytime there is a possibility for catalyst damage.
