Day before yesterday while I was driving, I heard a loud boom and gray smoke was coming out the back of the truck. By the time I parked it there was a flame under the passenger dashboard and black smoke coming out of the hood. I jumped out and ran. Immediately it "exploded" again and did so about five or six times within a few minutes. The entire front end was engulfed in flames. Previously before this happened the truck had been "lacking power" and did not pick up speed as if it did not want to go; especially up hills. I really just want to know what could have possibly caused this as I am still terrified and want to prevent this from ever happening in any vehicle I drive.

with out us actually seeing it will be hard to diagnose because of age and mileage. something may have shorted out in one of the harnesses and caught a hose or rubber item on fire then it went from there. also the circumstances have a lot to do with it as well like was check engine light on or had been and not repaired? Was it extremely hot outside etc.

Thank you. Yes the check engine light was on and it was extremely hot that day. I had also took it to the shop a few hours before and had a solenoid switch put on. Thanks again for responding.

thanks for using 2carpros, but on a case like yours it really has to be physically looked at to make a proper determination.
