exhaust pipe fell off

my exhaust pipe fell off from at the back box and i am informed that i will need to replace the entire exhaust. is this the case and if so what sort of cost should i expect?

If entire exhaust means from the converter back, then yes, that is very common. In order to re-use any parts of the exhaust, they have to be strong enough to be separated from the other components and re-sealed and that is rare unless it was replaced recently. The converter should be able to be re-used.
