engine turns over but won't start

The engine turns over but the car won't start, the check engine light has been coming on but then going off again. I have been told it is a sensor and am wondering what an average cost to have this fixed might be.

it has to be scanned for codes first to see what sensor it is. also fuel pressure must be checked with a gauge. autopparts rent it.
