Can a 2005 Mazda 3 2.3l engine be swapped out and put into a 2008 Mazda 3 2.3l? They are both manual.

The simple answer is yes, they can.
You may have to make some changes to be sure everything from the old motor is transferred to the donor motor. Check both engines carefully.
According to the engine manuals, they are the same block.
