Car sometimes runs rough and sometimes shuts off but starts again. Does not seem to happen until warms and probably worst about time thermostat opens.

Good morning.

A couple of things come to mind. It could be fuel related or spark related.

I would start by checking the fuel pressure. Low fuel pressure will cause this issue.

Also, GM had big issues with engine cut off from bad ignition modules and crank sensors. The module you can have tested at a parts store for free. The crank sensor needs a scan tool that can monitor the voltage while the issue happens.

Problem solved. Crank sensor had accumulated metal particles on inside grove of sensor probably rubbing ring in balancer. Magnetic attraction holding firmly. No idea where particle originated but appeared somewhat rusty and inside balancer new in appearance. Running super now! Maybe could had cleaned with air if knew?

I would need to know why this happened or it will happen again. it does not sound right.

check the balancer real close for any damage. I would remove it again and inspect.

Already checked for damage and clearance. Only thing maybe possible was previous owner had change new belts and maybe rusty bolts disturbed removing idlers?

Nope, that would not do it.

I would have it checked by someone as a second opinion.

Did solve the problem and one problem the sensors have is electromagnetism. No need for second opion .

If that is what you wish. I would not accept the fact that the metal filings are normal.

Metal filings not normal, right. Looks like from removing rusty bolt threads?

no, not from rust. filings come from something abnormally wearing.
