Hello,
The check engine light illuminating means that your car's computer is registering a fault. To find out what the code means, you will need to connect a diagnostic scan tool to your car's diagnostic port. I purchased a basic model that will read and erase codes (usually all the novice needs to have) at Walmart for about $20.00. Below is a link to an article that will give you more information on how to retrieve the codes, and what to do with them once you have them.
