Engine shut off and won't start

I was driving through cold damp weather and had cruise control on at 65 mph. I saw the tach surge to about 4 500 rpm, then immediately the car shut off. I pulled over waited for the car to stop and turn the switch and it cranks but doesn't start. I can hear the fuel pump run when I turn the switch. Thank you for any help you can give.

The tach surging makes the crank sensor very suspect but you should be doing the whole battery of testing for spark, injector pulse, fuel pressure and compression.
