A week ago, after my brakes were adjusted the mechanic also adjusted my brake pedal.

4 days later I noticed a subtle rattle coming from the engine. It became more pronounced over the days.

Mechanic ran a diagnostic test and got no result. Then recommended an oil and filters change plus spark plugs. Rattle became less pronounced but still present.

I suspect it’s the solenoid, but mechanic has ruled it out since it didn’t appear on the diagnostic report. Mechanic, suggest we replace the timing chain. I believe we haven’t exhausted all options before opening the engine.

Hi,

Can you explain the noise you hear? For example, does it change with engine speed? Where is it most pronounced? Does it come from the engine compartment? Also, is it loud enough for you to record and upload for me to hear?

A timing chain doesn't go bad overnight. It happens over time, so I question if that is the issue.

If you could record it and let me hear it, it may be very helpful. Also, when you hear it, pay attention to where it is coming from. For example, the front of the engine, the rear of the engine, or even under the vehicle.

Take a look through this link as well and see if there is anything you find helpful:

I will watch for your reply.

Take care,

The noise is coming from the engine. Please find attached two sound clips. One was from the engine and the other was from the cabin of the car from beneath the steering column.

The sound initially was a moderate to loud clunking sound. Like something was knocking at a constant rate. Then the knocking would increase when revs increased.

Yesterday, in denial that there is a problem with my timing chain, I engaged a local garage to carry out an inspection of the undercarriage of the vehicle. To assess if there was something that was knocking the exhaust and sending the sound to the engine. That hypothesis was dismissed.

However, the mechanic in-charge recommended I purchase an oil treatment (Bardahl Oil Treatment 2). I purchased a can and poured it into the engine. Drove back home and the sound subsided. Today, I purchased another can. The engine has toned down significantly. Mechanic in-charge today mentioned that there could be a blockage preventing oil from getting to the timing chain. He suggested I continue to travel and monitor the changes. Then to use the additive again at the next service.

However, I am still concerned as to the status of the car. I regularly service my car. But hearing mechanics suggest that I haven't taken care of my car makes me question their professional opinion.

Hi,

Things wear out. I doubt it's from maintenance. I can't be sure, but it sounds like what I suggested. It's really easy to test. Remove the mechanical fuel pump and pushrod. Once the pushrod is removed, reinstall the pump to prevent oil leaks and start it to see if the sound is gone.

Let me know what I can do to help.

Take care and let me know what I can do to help.

The problem has been resolved.

The diagnosis was that the alternator had failed. Pulley and Rotor had a lot of play. That was sending vibrations into the engine. The alternator was repaired and fitted.

The car is purring better than before. Just a slight ticking sound while on the Highway. It’s negligible but sounds like a small stone caught in the threads of the tire. Hopefully it will become clear what it is.

Hi,

Thank you for the update. I have a feeling it will help others. I'm glad the timing chain wasn't replaced.

Regardless, I am glad to hear the problem is resolved.

Take care of yourself and please feel free to come back anytime in the future.
