Local place changed the oil on a customers car, from what customer can gather they either neglected to put oil in or he had a bad leak. In any case there’s metal shavings in the oil and he’s contacted me for replacing the engine with one from a 2003 745i.

I’ve replaced engines before but not BMW's. Planning to take it slow and careful but could use any tips or gotchas from those who’ve come before me. Anything I need to be aware of other than special tools for setting vanos, cam timing, and crank?

Hi,

Yes. Clearly you will want to keep everything organized on these. Lay everything out and bag and tag what you are not sure what it is. However, if the engine going in coming out of a running vehicle? If it is running then you should not have to set timing.

I included the basics procedure on what to remove to try and cut down on unneeded steps.

Let me know if you have questions. Thanks
