Engine rattle/knocking noise

tThe car was working fine then out of nowhere it started to smoke as if was overheating. I turned the car off and when I turned it back on there was a rattling or knocking noise.

Sounds as if the engine has failed with a main or big end bearing running dry, check oil level and oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, but often when the knock starts the damage has been done, you may be up for a replacement engine, but do the checks first just to be sure what you are facing.
