While i was driving, my engine started to overheat. I turned the heat on high to try and get some heat out and noticed cold air was coming from the vents. When i got home there was a white smoke? Coming from the hood, and when i lifted the hood i noticed the oil fill cap was missing and my coolant was gone. There was coolant in there before as i had just gotten my car checked out about a month ago. If i refill the coolant would it be safe to drive to a mechanic without causing further damage?

Hi,

It sounds like the engine is already hurt if I understood you correctly. It all depends on how far the mechanic is. If it is more than a few miles, I would just have it towed. The last thing you want is to cause any damage that would increase your repair cost by trying to save a $50.00 tow bill.

However, if they are not far, then if you start it up and leave immediately and keep an eye on the temperature you should be fine. If you are going to do this, top off the coolant and don't take any detours. :)

If it were my car, I would probably have it towed. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks
