Exhaust started to smoke, no oil in car. have been told the impeller in turbo has excessive play. is this likely to be cause of oil loss?

Hello,

If you have excessive blue smoke pouring out of your exhaust and you suspect it's the turbo then it is probably your output shaft seal that has failed. This could be caused by excessive play in your output shaft bearings(the high speed bearings).Turbos are fairly simple, they have an input shaft(which is driven by exhaust) with a large gear attached to it that drives a smaller gear attached to the output shaft which has a compressor wheel. It is the compressor wheel that compresses the air before it enters the engine's combustion chamber Each shaft is housed in the turbo body which shares the engines oil supply and each shaft has a lip seal to hold in the oil. The output shaft seal has probably failed. Please get back to us with what you are able to find out.

Thanks,
Alex
