I have just received an Volvo S40 2004 model 2.4i with around 56,000 km on the clock which I bought from Japan. When I turn off the engine it gives a whining noise - something I have had from any other car before on switching off. Is this normal for a Volvo. IF not what could be the problem. After driving it for 3 days it says that the now needs a regular service. What is the normal mileage for a regular service?

Also when stopping the car makes a noise like something is grinding. I have checked the brake pads and discs and these look fairly okay. Again is this normal for a Volvo? If not what could be the problem?

None of the things you mentioned are normal for a Volvo. As far as the noise, can you tell aprox where it is coming from? The grinding when stopping sounds like a brake issue. Have you checked all brakes? As far as scheduled maintenance, you need to follow the owner's manual recommendations.
