When going up a long hill the engine would sometimes start to backfire or pop and hesitate. With a timing light attached the timing mark jumps back and forth a couple degrees from the timing mark. I bought a new distributor, the old one had the gears worn down quite a lot and the truck ran OK for about a month and then did the popping, backfire noise again. This only happened rarely going up long hills. If a mechanic test drove it then it wouldn't happen so I haven't gotten professional help.
Also I took the valve cover off to look at the valves with the engine running and with the timing light because one mechanic told me it could be something to do with the valves. I couldn't tell anything with the timing light, didn't know what to look for but two of the rocker arms on top of the valve mechanism didn't have any oil on them and all the rest did so I thought maybe that would mean something is wrong there. They are hydraulic valve lifters.
The spark plug and wires have been replaced, carburetor cleaned and put back with a new kit, there is a vacuum leak at the pcv gasket which I still have to get, the oil recently changed, coolant flushed and drained.
Just before problems of backfire and popping and stalling the ignition coil went bad and was replaced.
I would like to know what I should ask a mechanic to look at on it. I wondered if the timing gears or camshaft might be bad.
Now that the weather is warming up it stalls frequently idling at stoplights and also if restarted shortly after being driven so it is not driven much.

I think I would test the fuel pump pressure and volume. It sounds like it could be starving for fuel at that point.
