Engine issue: replacing the belt for the alternator and water pump

My belt that goes to my alternator and water pump has recently broke. I am trying to decide if I want to replace it myself or have a mechanic to replace it. Does the timing belt have to be removed before I can replace the other belt? What special tools or equipment would I need to replace this belt?

No need to turn a quick, simple job into a major one. You don't get anywhere deep enough into the engine to replace the timing belt. That is an all-day job for a do-it-yourselfer, and it requires a special tool to set the tension correctly. Removing the alternator belt is just the first step in a long list of steps in replacing the timing belt.
