We noticed a diesel smell inside the car, then a couple of days later the car engine started smoking. There are no warning lights on.

Hi,

It looks like the valve cover gasket has come apart and is leaking oil. Chances are it is getting on to the exhaust or other hot component.

Take a look below. I attached a pic from what you sent. Is that wet with oil? If it is and that is the valve cover in the pic, that gasket needs to be replaced.

Check to confirm it is oil where I indicated and let me know.

Take care,

joe

Thank you! Yes, it is wet with oil. Is it the whole gasket that would need replacing or can you just replace the cover?

The cover is the expensive part. Once it is removed, the gasket is replaced and the cover is reused.

I don't like how your gasket has blown out from under the cover. If you look at pic 1 below, it shows the gasket that needs replaced. In picture 3, I highlighted where the PCV valve is located on the valve cover. Make sure the hose as well as the cover are not plugged. I they are, they need cleaned so air can pass through them. Otherwise, pressure will build up and likely cause the problem to happen again.

Take a look through the directions and let me know if they help or if you have questions.

Take care,

Joe

See pics below. Note: Disconnect the negative battery terminal before starting the job.
