engine died shortly after fill up and will not restart

After filling up wedrove about 5 to 7 miles including going up and down a steep.hill. while stopped going down hill the engine died and will not restart. The car was pushed onto a transport and towed home aftersittng for several days we tried to start it and an alarm began to sound. What could have caused the engine to die and what is the alarm we are getting
