Engine Coolant Overtemperature Sensor warning message turned on?

The dash warning for Engine Coolant Over Temperature came on. The coolant level in reservoir is between min and max and fan is running. Reset it with a scan tool and the warning went away. Drove it and everything was fine. Next day, drove it further and the warning came on again. Temperature gauge never registered above the middle. Reset with the scan tool and drove another couple of miles. Warning came on again. Reset and the warning came on immediately.

Any suggestions? I want to check the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, but don't know where it is. Can you send a diagram or tell me?

Hello,

It does sound like you might have a faulty temperature sensor.
The ECT is located under the intake tubing.

Hi Sean M,

Thank you for your quick reply. I have removed the air intake hose and see the sensor connection. Disconnected it at the top and it that looks okay from the outside. So, I've ordered the sensor and will follow the instructions to replace it. Hopefully that solves the problem. Will let you know.

Looked up the problem code and find that it is more likely the Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) sensor. Can you tell me where the CHT is located and send me a diagram? Thanks

Code is 1299. When I looked it up on the internet, it said cylinder overtemperature protection. Do you agree with replacing the CHT to see if it solves the problem?

Yes, the temperature sensor is a good first step, as there is no other issues.

Wanted to wait until we had driven the car for a few weeks. So far, seems to have fixed the problem. I replaced the Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor (CHT) as the code indicated this was the problem. Had already ordered the Engine Coolant OverTemperature sensor, so replaced it, too, while I was at it. Put it all back together, reset, and haven't had any warnings or problems since. The diagrams and explanations you sent walked me through it and I was able to complete everything.

The hardest part was getting the right CHT sensor. I went to NAPA and bought the one that was specified. When I removed it from my engine, it looked nothing like the one from NAPA. Everything on the internet (Ford parts, other parts stores) indicated the one from NAPA was the right one for my model, year, engine, etc. I finally went to the NAPA website and just put in CHT without any information on my car. It gave me pictures and descriptions of 28 different ones. I wrote down the numbers for the ones that looked closest to the one off my car. Took my list to NAPA and they pulled the part from my list. It looked just like the one from my car, but still said it was not for my car. Brought it home and it fit. Don't understand why, but glad it worked.
