Engine coolant over temperature

I recently replaced my alternator and when I start the car it runs fine for the first two or three minutes. Then I receive an error that my coolant temperature is too high and the car shuts off. It starts right back up and runs or a minute or two again then shuts off. I checked the belt, its ran properly, all the pulleys are moving properly. Could it be the coolant temperature sensor? I just ordered and OBDII scan tool should be here Friday so I don't have any codes yet.

Just a quick question first. When this happens does the check engine light come on or flash? Most local auto parts stores like AutoZone will check codes for free as opposed to you buying a code reader.Here is a tutorial showing what is involved in checking codes.
