Clearly anything is possible but there are things as coincidences. If you suspect the previous mechanic caused it, I would suggest you take it to another mechanic and tell them what happened and that you want everything documented as they take it apart to try to and verify if they did anything wrong.
Unfortunately, there is no way to know for sure based on this information. On the surface I would think it is suspicious at best so if you don't trust this mechanic, I would have another try to identify exactly what caused the engine to fail and then you can go to the next step and approach the other shop.
