The cylinder head for my vehicle was removed for skimming. On putting it back, a o-ring seal was left out because the mechanics did not know where it should have been put. What could be its right place? I am worried as my engine may develop more and serious problems as a result of the o-ring seal.

We do not have information for your brand or model, but if the person assembling the engine was the same person who took it apart, you probably have nothing to worry about. Very often there are just a few slight differences or additions to the number of gaskets and seals needed between a number of engine sizes or years. Rather than produce and have to keep in inventory a dozen different gasket kits that are all almost identical, they will just include all the parts in one kit that cover the needs for any of those engines. You just do not use the parts that do not apply to your engine. It is extremely rare to use a gasket kit and not have a few parts left over.

Thank you for your quick response. The seal I am talking about was removed from the engine but on returning the removed components, the seal was left out. In my own view this means there is a place where it should seal which could be leaking oil now.

Do you have low oil pressure or an external leak?

I feel fairly certain there were extra parts in the gasket set that were not needed for your application. My students did a total engine rebuild for me a few years ago, and there were over a dozen individual pieces left over from the gasket kit when they were done. Nothing you've mentioned so far suggests there is a problem you need to worry about.
