Engine will not idle

Check the following; make sure there are no engine vacuum leaks. Also, check the idle air control (IAC) for proper operation and make sure there it is clean. Make sure the throttle body is clean and not slugged. Finally, with that many miles, keep in mind engine compression could be an issue. If there is more than a ten percent variation between cylinders, you could get a rough idle. However, since it will not idle, chances are it is one of the items I mentioned.

So it was the the throttle position sensor. It's finally running now but smokes really bad.

Just to add to this one what color is the smoke out the tail pipe?Also has the coolant temp sensor been changed?They go bad and can cause smoke issues starting and idle issues.

Black smoke and yes the temperature control sensor has been changed.

So you also replaced the throttle position sensor?Also have you scanned the computer for codes?
