Will the engine out of a 2001 4wd Xterra fit in my 2003 2wd Xterra?

Welcome back. Going by the part number from Nissan it looks like the base engine is the same from 07/2001-10/2003 . 10102-9Z2H7 However, that is the bare engine without the intake or exhaust or other accessories so you might need to swap those pieces over if they are different.
