I went to take off in my truck and it made a loud hard thunk sound. Sounded like it was coming from the drivers side rear. It did it going forward and backwards. I pulled the wheel off, pulled the rotor, saw that there were a little bit of grooves now in the rotor. the shoes look okay, plenty of pad. just replaced all of this less than a year ago.. but I noticed the e brakes shoes, one side was ground down to almost nothing! I never use my e brake. Lots of black "dust" on everything.

Good evening,

Even though you do not use it, they still have a drag on to the inside of the rotor. It sounds like the e brake cable is frozen in the on position even though you have not used it.

I would replace the shoes and while you have them off, pull on the cables and see if they move freely and retract.

Removal Procedure

1. Release the park brake.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting..
3. Remove the park brake cable from the equalizer by pulling down on the intermediate cable and release the cable from the equalizer bar.

4. Remove the cable from the mounting bracket by depressing the locking tabs.

5. Remove the cable at the lower shock absorber mount by removing the bolt.

6. Remove the rear cable mounting bracket bolt.

7. Remove the cable from the lever.

8. Remove the cable (2) from the rear brake cable mounting bracket (3) by depressing the locking tabs (1) on the brake cable.

9. Remove the cable from the guides and the body mounts.
