I am adding a trailer hitch and wiring to my vehicle. I want to just tap into the rear tail lights to hook up the four wire flat connector for the trailer wiring. Is it safe to do this, or do I have to spend the $60.00 to purchase a special wiring adapter to plug into the wiring harness? I do not want to damage the cars computer, or cause weird electrical problems.

Yes, you really should spend the money. I believe the reason for the adapter is that you have separate turn signal and brake lights and the trailer uses one light for both.

The truck should be equipped with a trailer tap in the rear harness that allows you to buy an adapter that simply plugs into their trailer wiring plug.

Okay, I was afraid that was going to be the case. Thank you.
