ECU Location and replacement?

How to Remove the ECM/PCM for Testing

If the inspection for a trouble code requires voltage or resistance checks at the ECM/PCM connectors, remove the ECM/PCM and test it:

1. Remove glove box.

2. Disconnect the gray 20P ECM/PCM wire harness connector, and remove it from the ECM/PCM mounting bracket. Disconnect the 7P mode control motor connector. Remove PGM-FI main relay 2 (A). Remove the ECM/PCM mounting bolt (B) and the bracket.
3. Remove the nuts, then remove the ECM/PCM (C).
4. Install the ECM/PCM in the reverse order of removal.

Is it very expensive to replace the main computer?

It can be. It would depend on where you bought it and who installed it. It looks like there are 4 possible part numbers for that vehicle, and they all run around $800.00 for new ones. You would need the same part number that you have in it, which should be on the tag on the current part. With that number you might find a used one online for less. Both would need to be programmed to match your vehicle though.

Check engine light came on, now car runs poorly especially in cold temperatures. It's not misfiring, it's just real weak. Putting it in D3 it almost won't move, so I have to put it in D1 to drive until the engine warms up enough and then I can shift to D3. My local mechanic said their diagnostic computer shows code 1607 which is for the ECU/PCM.

My question is, if the part is as easy to replace as I've seen online, does it have to be reprogrammed after it's installed? Or is it just a simple plug and play so long as the replacement part is an identical match? If it's easy to replace myself, I'd like to avoid paying the mechanic hundreds to do it if I can. Appreciate your insight!

Yes, it is a code for the ECM. You need to replace it.

It is located at the right kick panel. You will need a new one and yes, it has to be programmed to your car.
