brake light switch / brake lights are usually on

While driving, or parked, my brake lights seem to always be on. When I pull the brake pedal up, the brake lights would then go off. After doing this for about 3 weeks, it is getting harder to keep them off. After pulling up on the pedal and making sure the brake lights are off, I will leave the car. When I come back they are on.

I been told that it is probably the brake light switch. I have gone under the dash to check it out. Found the switch. When I press in the plunger, the lights DO go off. It seems like a "distance" issue ... either the plunger needs to be moved forward, closer to the brake arm, OR the brake arm needs to be adjusted back to the plunger. Is there a way to adjust either of these? If so, which one should I adjust and HOW? Or do I need a new brake light switch? If I install a new one, will I have the same "distance" issue?

Usually you can pull or push the switch into and out of the brackett...Book says push into brackett as far as it will go then pull up on brake pedal, no further adjustment needed! Maybe the bracket could use a little pinch with pliers to tighten it up again!

Thanks so much for the info. I pushed the plunger all the way in ..... and it clicked into a position. This created a further distance between the plunger and the brage arm. I followed your instructions by pulling the plunger out with pliers. While pulling it out, it 'clicked' as it passed each position. It ended up long enough to make good contact with the brake arm! Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it!
