Setting the timing

I had to replace the left cylinder head. Marked all the timing marks on the cam shaft bearings, the timing chain, cam bearing caps, and camphors. The arrows on the camphors were a little off. Installed a refurbished head with valves, cams, etc. Lined up the timing marks on the cams, cam bearing caps, timing chain and camphors. All lined up perfectly except for the arrows.
They are approx. a 1/4 " off..

Question 1. Is it necessary for the arrows to be perfectly lined up if all the other marks are?

Question 2. How do I line them up without messing up the other marks? Will I have to release the tension on the timing chain to do it?

Thanks

Hi,

There are marks that need to be set and links on the timing chains that are marked (plated) that need aligned. Additionally, there are a few other steps to get the cam phasers aligned, confirming the cams are at TDC via alignment holes, and so on.

I attached the directions below for reinstalling the chains. Take a look through them and let me know if they help.

Take care,

Joe

Hi Joe. The information is very helpful. The last diagram clearly shows the arrows need to be lined up. What is their purpose, possibly the crankshaft alignment? Can I adjust them by turning the crank shaft or do I have to start all over, i.e. release the tension, etc. I have attached photos of the tops of the cam shafts and faces of the camphors showing where we are now. Thanks for your insight.

Hi,

They are off. Because of all the variables that require alignment, I would recommend taking the chains off and starting over. If you follow the directions above, it will get you in time.

I wish I had an easier answer. Please let me know if there is anything I can help with.

Take care,

Joe
