Cannot get the drive shaft back in place.

Are these replacement shafts or the shafts that you removed?

have you checked the the spline count is correct and the diameter of the shaft is the same?

Everything is the same.

then alignment is a problem and may be the retainer clip is very tight and not compressing easily to enter the splines.
