Drive shaft replacement

2004 HYUNDAI SANTA FE

Hi,

I brought my car to the mechanic for 3 different reasons:

Engine light is on.
A/C does not blow cold air.
Intermittent squeaky noise from the rear, especially taking a turn.

He came back and said the Drive Shaft needs to be replaced and a new one costs about $2,200.00 or a used one he hopefully could find for $1,100.00 possibly more. This does not include labor.
Is this accurate? I leave in the northeast of Mass

I would think this is for all the parts for the three things he recommended and not just the driveshaft.

Here is a link to a popular parts website that lists it for less then $500.00. Clearly there is a disconnect somewhere. I would ask him for a breakdown of the estimate so you can see what he is quoting you.

Thank you so much. No the price was just for the driveshaft. I told him I could only afford to fix whatever is a safety issue.

Wow. That driveshaft was made of gold or something. Any time parts are that far off, we normally are talking about different parts. Clearly there is only one driveshaft so it is unlikely that we are talking about different parts. I don't blame you for what you did. It may be worth just getting a second opinion all together.
