Drive belt is whining and makes large noise when start car. Can't get a shop until Monday and have to work. Worried belt will break and ruin car. Question is, how likely do these belts break when only heard noise a week?

Hi,

If it is making noise, either the belt has stretched, something is on it such as oil, coolant or other substance allowing it to slip, or the automatic belt tensioner is bad and allowing it to be loose.

First, inspect the belt's condition. Is there any contaminants on it? If not, with the engine off, grab the belt and see if it feels tight. If it is loose, replace the belt and tensioner.

Replacement isn't too hard. The worst part is the limited amount of space and rerouting the new belt. Here are directions for belt replacement. The attached pics correlate with the directions.

1. Install the drive belt to the vehicle.
2. Starting at the generator, route the drive belt around all of the pulleys, except for the tensioner.

5. Install the intake manifold cover.

Next, one the belt is removed, spin each of the belt driven accessories to make sure nothing is dragging or locked up. If everything is good, apply pressure to the belt tensioner to see if it moves smoothly and has a good bit of resistance. If you feel it clicking, having little resistance, or not moving, replace it. Here are the directions for that as well. The attached pics correlate with the directions.
