The car will rank, go into gear but when i press the gas it feels like something has it caught up. almost like the brake is on.

Hi,
It is very possible that you have a brake sticking. Have you lifted one wheel at a time to see if you can turn each wheel easily? Let me know.
Next, is the check engine light remaining on when the engine is running? If it is, then have the computer scanned for diagnostic trouble codes. Most parts stores will do it free of charge.
