I have a feeling the check engine light should be on to have a fault stored and put your car into "limp mode" First thing you need to do is have the fault codes stored in you cars computer. If you don't have access to a scanner/code reader most auto parts stores have a tool loaner program and can rent you one. Some auto parts stores like AutoZone can check codes for free.Here is a tutorial showing what is involved for checking vehicles codes:
