teh temperature gauge is showing that the engine is running on the hot side, however the engine is not running hot. I've had the thermostat and the water pump replaced. We also noticed that the radiator is hot at the top prtion cold in the middle portion and hot again at the bottom portion, what might the problem be?

The radiator needs to be properly flushed. There is probably a large amount of scale deposits inside of the radiator. There are flushing agents for this and a vinegar solution will also do the trick; however, a shop that specializes in pressure washing radiators will yield the best results. Even a new radiator might be a viable, worry-free alternative to this.
