2000 Dodge Truck Power outlet

The power outlet on the dash is not working. I bought the truck a couple of weeks ago. I am an electrician so I checked the outlet of voltage with my muiltimeter by placing the pos. lead to the center pin and the neg. to the case of the outlet. What can be the problem with this oulet and how do i access the thing with out removing the whole dash. We are getting ready for a trip to Alaska in a couple of days and it would be really nice to use the outlet.

some things to check first.
you didn't say you checked the fuse.
should be fuse #15
20amp

and a lot of the modern cars do not have power to the outlet unless the key is in the ON position.

It's unlikely the outlet is bad, it's just a couple chunks of metal.

I asked why the power plug in the dash may not have power. As I said earlier I checked the plug for power with ny multimeter since I am an electrician.
You came back with the answer that I should check the fuse (#15) and being a good electrican I did check that and no fuses are bad. I checked them with the meter also. But I still don't have power to the plug in the dash. Where else should I look? My owners manual says the power for that plub does not go through the switch but comes from the battery. I don't see any corrosion on the terminals nor do I see any wires loose under the hood. So where else should I look?

The schematic I looked at showed ONLY a cigarette lighter.

Do you have a separate cigarette lighter and a power point?

The power outlet that is dead is separated from the cigar lighter. The owners manual says the power for the plug should be coming directly from the battery and is not controlled by the ignition switch. Therefore any devices plugged into it must be disconnected to prevent running the battery down. Since the power is suppose to be coming from the battery I have checked for loose wires under the hood and found no loose wires or corroded wires. I'm open to any ideas you may have. Thanks

I don't see a power outlet in the schematics i have.

Only a cigarette lighter that runs through the ignition switch.

can you use the cigarette lighter for the power source on your trip to alaska?
