radiator coolant fan not working properly

i have a 2001 dodge stratus r/t 3.0 l v6 with 95,000 miles. my radiator cooling fan does not turn on often enough or stay on long enough, causing my car to run hot off and on throughout the day. i am considering changing the relay but was wondering if you know what might be causing this before i do anything with it. any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
