95 Chrysler cirrus with 180,000 miles and the 6 cylinder engine. My brother in law barrowed this car. It was running great before he took it. He was driving it over a high altitude pass when it started to cut out on him. He had it towed to a shop that told him the MAP sensor was faulty and when he was at the higher altitude it threw the air fuel mix off. He started it up and drove it around for 2 more days. He then called me stuck on the side of the freeway. When he called me, I was picking up a MAP, and I replaced it on the side of the road. Not surprising that it didn't make a differance. If you really try, you can get it to start, but it sputters, wont rev, and dies.
I am wondering if anyone knows what it may be. I am thinking timing belt, but the way it died going over the pass, and then ran fine for a few days and then died for good has me perplexed. I would think that if the belt goes out, it goes out. It may be that they are not related.
Just FYI, I have recently replaced the plugs, wires, and distributor cap.
Sort of a follow up question, I also have a 96 Dodge Stratus with about 80,000 miles. A year ago, I had the steering rack replaced on the 180,000 cirrus. If the problem I described above is major, I am just going to dump that car. However, if possible I want to swap out the racks on the 2 cars. I have 2 questions, first do you know if they would be interchangeable, the major differances being one is a 95 and one is a 96, and one is a 4 cyl. and one is a 6 cyl? The other question is how tough of a job is it? I have replaced engines, done head gaskets and just about everything else, but I have never messed with the steering.
