Heater problem 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 90,000 miles

I am trying to find the exact placement of the Thermostat on my 2005 Dodge Stratus. The heater is not working properly. It is cold air coming out when the heater is on. The heater will warm up some after the engine temperature goes up. the engine temperature does not get above the half way mark. I need to know where exactly the thermostat is located and what kind of problems there could be with the engine. Thanks.

Hello,

The thermostat location is at the end of the upper radiator hose inside of the housing on the engine. Here is a guide and a diagram to help you get the job done.

Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Cheers, Ken

then check the radiator for cold spots AFTER the engine is shut off and warmed up. if you feel cold spots then the rad is bad. Also have it checked for a head gasket/intake gasket leak. Or any broken hoses.

In February 2014 I bought a 2004 Dodge Stratus with 46,000 miles. I have since racked up to 87,000 today with my long commute. I've had multiple repairs every 3 or 4 months but mostly the thermostat and gasket. They have been replaced 3 times. First when the whole engine died and was replaced in November. Again in March a month after my heat failed and the heater core was flushed. The idler pulley was also replaced then. The third time was yesterday. Each time at a different shop. This third time the mechanic told me I had missing bolts and wrong pieces all throughout. Too many to list. Reviews I find online for my car and Dodge in general are not good, bottom of the barrel. But it also seems like I have had bad mechanics. Should this car at this age need a thermostat and gasket so often or do I need a better mechanic?

obviously the one that has looked at it last is ok as he has found missing pieces and bolts. no it shouldn't need thermostats that often but maybe because of shoddy work inpast is why. try the last guy to see if he can straighten it out. next time also put engine size in when asking a question. thanks.

Engine Cooling problem 2003 Dodge Stratus 4 cyl i had a little leak on my thrmostat housing,so went to a parts store to get a new Thermostat Housing Gasket, since i was there picked up a new thermostat and it doesnt call for a regular gasket, just the seal,so when i went to put it in it did fit around the thermostat and inside the housing but when i went to put it on the block to tighten it down it seem way to big, seal didnt fit flush in the housing like the old one did,so i decided to go to a dodge dealer to get one but theres the same way,i was told it was an updated seal and it will fit, tighten it and it will compress to make a seal,so was wondering where they updated and should i use it

You shouldn't have a problem. I have that exact seal and had replaced mine a few months ago and haven't had any leaks.

The thermostat is located on the lower left near the front. It is on the inlet side of the waterpump. I have attached a picture for you. As far as bleeding the system after the job is done, it has an air bleed on the flange of the thermostat to allow trapped air to exit when refilling.

Yes, from the front. You will see a large radiator hose going to it and a smaller hose (for the heater core).

I'm glad you emailed back. I reviewed our posts. I wanted to mention to you to make sure the bleeder on the t-stat flange needs to be in the 12 o'clock position.

Will a car heat without a thermostat?

No. The thermostat closes to block coolant flow until the engine warms up. That's when parts expand, fit properly, and the least amount of wear takes place. At about 195 degrees the thermostatic spring opens the thermostat to let the hot coolant flow to the radiator. That hot coolant is what circulates through the heater core in the dash board to provide the heat.

In rare instances an engine lacking a thermostat can actually overheat. That is more likely to happen in summer. After the engine fully warms up, the hot coolant circulates so fast it doesn't stay in the radiator long enough to cool down.

Where is the thermostat located on a Dodge Stratus with a 2.4 engine.

Also the door a-jar keeps going off when the door is shut. Is this a sensor and if so where is it located so i can replace it.

Locate your upper radiator hose. Follow that hose towards the engine block. You will see the thermostat housing with two bolts securing it.

One of your door switches is bad. Figure out which one and replace. It is located on the door sill.
