2002 Dodge Stratus shifting

2002 DODGE STRATUS

Engine light came on seconds before I discovered I could not shift from 1st to 2nd gear.
Put into neutrel at red light...shift into drive upon green light and it slams into 1st gear.
Any idea where to look for the problem?

The first thing to do is have the computer scanned. If the check engine light came on, there is a code stored in the computer that will identify where the problem is coming from. Most or the parts stores will do it for free. Let me know what you find.
