clunky transmission

1993 Dodge Ram 3/4 T 4x4 Diesel, 285,000 miles.
My transmission seems to clunk especially loud going from, say 2nd to 3rd gear. I've only had the truck for a year so I dont know the transmission history. Also I was told the front u-joints were rusty. Could this be causing the noise?

Yes the U joints would be my first guess, Just block the front & rear tires with 2x4's of wood then, set the truck into N gear, Then crawl under turn the drive shaft back and forth to see if their is any play, If so youre U jonts are wornout.
