The speedometer and odometer stopped working.

The ABS and Brake light came on. Then we noticed that the speepometer and odometer wen't working. We had a friend do the brakes, but the ABS and brake light are still on. He didn't know what to do about the speedometer and Odometer.

Hi VanHoesen,

Thank you for the donation.

The odometer and speedometer not working is most likely be due to a faulty Vehicle Speed Sensor ( VSS ) and it could cause the ABS and brake indicator lights to show.

Autozone provides free scanning services to retrieve trouble codes. Get it done and let me know the exact trouble code if any found.

The trouble code was P0500
Vehicle speed sensor ciruit condition

ECM has detected a fault in the vehicle speed sensor circuit

Probable cause: Poor electrical connection or short circuit condition, failed VSS, or drive gear mechanical fault

How easy is this to fix?

Thanks

Here is a description of the DTC code.

DTC P0500: NO VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL is monitored continuously with engine running. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) when PCM senses output shaft speed more than 64 RPM, engine coolant temperature more than 104°F (40°C), MAP vacuum 15-16 in. Hg, engine speed more than 1500 RPM and no vehicle speed signal from Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB) module for more than 15 seconds for 2 consecutive trips.

Possible causes are: CAB module DTCs are present, defective CAB module, defective PCM, defective connector or defective wiring.

A scanner would be required to test and verify the cause of the problem.
