I have a 1998 Dodge Ram F-1500 with an automatic transmission. I was driving on the freeway heading uphill. All of a sudden the transmission light goes on and it seems like the car went into neutral (engine revs but does not move). I put it into park, turn it off, turn it back on, and shifted it into Drive. Nothing.

I shifted it into reverse and of course it goes into reverse. Second gear... nothing... now for the weird part... I shift it into FIRST GEAR and it goes into REVERSE.

What could be wrong with it? How much would it cost to get it fixed?

Wow! that is an odd one. What I need you to do is have the computer scanned to determine what has caused the light to come on. THere should be a trouble code stored that will identify the problem.

The idea that it goes into reverse when plased in 1st leads me to believe the retaining clip in the low / reverse clutch pack has broken. However, I can't be sure without the code.

Have it scanned and let me know what you find.
