Someone ttold me I need to replace the rear main seal when replacing the oil pan gasket on my V10. Why is this?

Because the seal is in 2 parts & just the bottom 1/2 goes into the pan.

The V10 has a one piece seal held in a retainer no need to replace when doing oilpan
