My steering wheel has play. Not in the right to left turning of the wheels, but in the column itself. Even with the tilt mechenism locked, the syeering wheel can be moved an inch or so up-down right and left. It feels as if there is a u-joint right about where the transmission shift lever enters the steering column. Can this be tightened?

1988 Dodge Caravan V6 Automatic

Hello, after reading your description of your problem with the 88 Dodge Ram, it appears to be the same problem as in my 88 Dodge Caravan.

The Caravan may have the same equipment as your Ram.

My steering column has adjustable height of four positions, but no matter which position I set it in, the steering wheel assembly can be wobbled up and down about 1 inch, and side to side about 3/4 inch.

This motion includes the hub which holds the signal switch, and the key switch and the emergency flasher switch.

The lower section of the steering column stays solid.

The van steers great, no side to side play, but I fear that the column could become even more detached. ...with unknown consequences.

I am hoping for some time to disassemble the column and take a look. I have let this go on too long.

If you find out anything will you let me know? I will do the same.
