Electrical problem
1982 Dodge Ram V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic

I have an old dodge truck, it hadn't been driven in quite some time - first time I drive it more than 20 miles it gets a fuel delivery problem. It has a different engine than original, and an electronic fuel pump. Additionally, there is an interior switch for the fuel pump. Gas is coming out of the tank fine, and the fuel pump runs fine if hooked up directly to the battery, but doesn't run when I kick the engine over and run it off gas poured into the carb directly. I'd like to replace the fuel pump relay, but have no idea where it might be or what it looks like - this is also made tougher because the previous owner put in the custom switches and swapped the engine - hopefully things aren't too different from the original.
Additionally, when I got it towed back to my house when it was on a steep incline on the flatbed gas poured out of the tank - that indicates to me that there could be other issues going on on top of the tank, but before I drop it and get into that I want to eliminate the easy stuff first. Thanks for the help!

My software doesnt have any info on that vehicle. An 82 with a carb would most likely not have a factory electric fuel pump.It sounds like the power source for the fuel pump switch isnt hooked up right. There should be a spot to plug in at the fuse block that has power when key is in the run position, verify this with a test light.Honestly, I would install a mechanical fuel pump and do away with the electric one, the mechanical are far more reliable. You may want to lower the tank and see if they tried to install a tank unit out of another vehicle for the electric pump.
