Electrical problem

4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 97000 miles

When the headlights are ON, the entire right side of the taillight/brakelight goes off when you hit the brake. The left side functions normally.
With the headlights OFF, they both work normally.
I took it to a repair shop, they replaced a bulb housing and the brakeswitch. This fixed the problem for about a week, then it returned.
Is this the dimmer switch for the headlights going bad and if so can I fix it myself? I'm a poor college kid, and I only paid $500 for the car, but I keep getting tickets... please help!!!
