Engine Cooling problem

HI, yesterday i noticed that i was leaking fluid around the water pump. I bought a new one. My husband installed the new one last night. This morning when i drove him 1 mile downt he road to his semi, when i came back to the house i was smoking. Popped the hood and found coolant ALL OVER the drivers side. There was a puddle of coolant on top of the timing chain cover. Now hubby broke something that hold the nut in place on te timing chain cover, and we found a small crack on the cover. Could that be what is the problem with me loosing so much fluid. I mean we filled it up and i have a stream of fluid running out ONLY when running. the raditor is brand new, the water pump is new. please help
