1978 Other Dodge Models oil problem

1978 Other Dodge Models V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

The oil seems to be collecting in the heads and not draining back to the pan fast enough for proper lubrication. it ran for about 2 mins, and we heard what seemed like a knocking in the lower end. we shut it down and the dip stick showed no oil, (even though we know it was full) we waited and hour or so and it ALL came back to the pan. we did find some in the air cleaner tho...

suggestions?

HI there,

The oil return galleries are sludged up. as i imagine is the rest of the engine, you can try an engine flush with a 10 weight oil, and a good quality flushing compound,this may help clear some of the muck, i feel that the oil has not been changed often and the engine has done a considerable number of miles, try this first.
