1989 Dodge Omni Fuel Pump

My father and I are working on my Dodge omni and we are having a problem with the fuel pump. It will work for a little while and then stop. We were going to change it out with a universal fuel pump. Do you know of a way to switch from the orginal fuel pump to the universal pump on my car? I have looked in the repair manual for my car and the one they have listed looks like the universal and not like the one I have. I would love any help.

Its easier and safer and better to replace it and install what required for the vehicle
